about

„Modulation: Two orders of different realities that enter into resonance.”

What musical dialogues and improvisations become possible when we can’t see each other or play instruments together? When the Covid-19 pandemic hit Europe in the spring of 2020, theater musician Rasmus Nordholt-Frieling was right in the middle of an international theater production. During the lockdowns and mandatory professional pause that followed, he used his modular synthesizer to develop musical sketches which he then sent to musician friends all over the world.

Many of them answered with recordings of their own instruments and voices. Out of the combination of these recordings, over great distances, with Nordholt-Frieling’s rhythmic foundation, new musical motives, developments and song structures emerged that speak profound closeness and intimacy - although the protagonists recorded their
contributions, in some cases, on different continents.

The newly released EP “Transmission 20/21” contains 4 pieces of music that emerged from these collaborations. Alongside Rasmus Nordholt-Frieling, musical contributors include Camerounian singer Alima, Essen-based trombonist Moritz Anthes, Indian sound designer and producer Nikhil Narendra and Cologne-based producer and composer Ozan
Tekin. The visuals and graphics of the release and music videos were created by Nils Voges/sputnic, Friederike Nordholt/Haltewunsch and Miriam Michel.
